The ASWA prep committee's primary responsibilities include conducting regular top-10 rankings of a variety of high school sports, and select all-state teams in those sports as well. Yet here we are right after Labor Day, contemplating another rash of tragedies in high school football. With those tragedies come another set of well-meaning people and communities wondering what, if anything, they could have done to prevent it.
While researching and writing a story on Champion in 2017, I recall being struck standing in Perry Cemetery at Champion's gravesite by the simplicity of the stone but the tragic gone-far-too-soon message it conveyed: "Vaughn M. Champion — (March) 4, 1910 — Oct. 5, 1928"
The word legend is thrown out without thinking, some of the players I was lucky to play with did it for six, seven, eight, 10 years - and that's why they are so revered at Liverpool.
